A marriage of minds: Making biopharmaceutical collaborations work
Research
shows that collaboration is a key element of innovation. Yet, in a survey jointly conducted by IBM Institute for Business
Value and Silico Research, more than half of all biopharmaceutical alliances did not work. Three traits are required for
a successful alliance: internal alignment of the strategies, structures and scientific goals of the partners; properly managed
boundaries; and lasting commitment. New tools and technologies can also play a major role in helping people within the extended
enterprise communicate across time and space.

power of many: ABCs of collaborative innovation throughout the extended enterprise IBM's Instititute for
Business Value recently released a study of how collaboration is needed to drive innovation in today's extended and distributed
enterprises based on the IBM Global CEO Study 2006. Based on that research, IBM's experience and two examples of best practice
cases, the paper presents a framework – the ABCs of collaborative innovation – that can improve the chances of
success in this increasingly important area.
