zTips Newsletter for Business Partners

October 2008

I hope everyone had a good end to the quarter!   As we head into the last few months of 2008, its important to keep the momentum going!

A few words on the System z IT Analyst Summit 2008:

zSummit, hosted in New York last week by Steve Mills and Anne Altman, was not just a premier event for System z - it's the latest and most ambitious in a series of efforts designed to educate the marketplace on the value and viability of System z for new workloads. With more than 50 top international industry analysts and press in attendance, this one-day event featured real-world success stories, proof points and new product announcements that powerfully demonstrate System z's power and agility to handle today's business challenges.

Mainframe momentum

The positive buzz at this year's event was unmistakeable; many attendees agreed that the mainframe is better poised for growth now than at any time in years. The progress is evident in milestones achieved since zSummit 2007:

  • Enthusiastic market reception to the breakthrough performance capabilities of the z10 EC
  • A greatly enriched portfolio of software offerings honed for System z and Linux on z
  • A vibrantly growing ecosystem with 600 new mainframe applications in 2007 - bringing the total to more than 4,000 unique applications available on the System z platform
  • Unprecedented enthusiasm and growth in the number of universities and students participating in the System z Academic Initiative.

The message: Think z first for new applications

Keynote speakers Mills and Altman were joined by senior IBM executives and Distinguished Engineers, customers, ISVs and academic leaders in sharing the proven capabilities of System z hardware and software, including those previously considered the domain of only distributed platforms. With z10 and the fast-growing z software portfolio, the mainframe has become not only a valid platform choice for new workloads, but often a better choice, because of its unique capabilities. This was the overarching message delivered in the keynotes, and focused into more specific key messages, examples and proof points throughout they day's sessions, including:

  • Companies should consider System z first for their new workloads
  • Mainframes cost less (short and long term) for many new workloads
  • Mainstream adoption for new workloads on z is accelerating
  • Today's mainframe simplifies the IT environment
  • The market is using System z to consolidate distributed workloads
  • ISVs are investing heavily on System z
  • Mainframe skills are crucial and increasingly available
  • Today's mainframe is very energy efficient (and 'Green')

The event also featured one-on-ones and announcement of new IBM Software offerings for System z in the continued expansion of the System z Software portfolio.

Good selling - Holly

  New TPM/zVM Linux Cookbook

The “z/VM Linux Guests Automated Provisioning with Tivoli Provisioning Manager Cookbook has been written as a companion to the IBM Redbooks IBM z/VM and Linux on IBM System z: Virtualization cookbook for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and IBM z/VM and Linux on IBM System z: Virtualization cookbook for SLES9 . Both of these documents provide step by step instructions on setting up a z/VM system and installing RHEL4 or SLES Linux as z/VM guests. The redbooks provide instructions for manual installation of the Linux guests but provide very little information how to setup automated cloning.

This document provides detailed steps for installing and using IBM Tivoli Provisioning Manager to automate cloning of existing z/VM Linux guests to create new systems.
