A note from Steve Early, Business Unit Executive - System z Software Sales
We had another
successful year for System z Software channels. Many of our Business Partners turned in terrific performances across
the globe, which shows what committed sellers can do in a difficult economy. In 2008, we made several investments in
our channel program, including greater access for Business Partners to our demonstration systems, development of a channels
enablement road map, establishment of an external System z Software web site for our Business Partners, publication of a
regular zTips newsletter, co-marketing funding and improved program terms in various countries. Be sure to check out

My hope is to see the investments made by both of us over the past
12 months manifest itself into a fast start in 2009 for all of us and another record-setting year, from a business results
standpoint!! Steve
A note from Eric Baxley, Director - System z Software Marketing As
we begin a new year, I thought I'd take a moment to re-cap some key points from 2008: - Introduction of 2 new models:
- the z10
Enterprise Class (50% faster, 70% more capacity and 3x the memory of predecessors)
- and z10
Business Class (40% faster, 50% more total capacity and 2x the maximum memory compared to the z9 Business Class)
- Several
new System z Software announcements - including Cognos on z and new Enterprise Modernization solutions for System z
- According
to IDC, since 2000 IBM System z market share has nearly doubled - growing from 17% to 32% (over that time, HP and Sun have
lost market share)
- From an ISV perspective, we've had tremendous success:
- over 600 new applications
and more than 100 new ISVs in 2008
- over 2,450 applications on System z Linux, 15% growth in 2008
- over
1,400 ISVs are building applications for System z
- over 5,000 applications are available on System z
- On
the Academics front
- over 50,000 students are being educated world-wide, adding 10,000 more in China by 2010
- 500
schools are enrolled globally as of August 2008, 900% growth in 2 years (2,000% increase since 2003 with 50+% outisde of
the US)
It's never been a more exciting time to be a part of the mainframe market! Together
IBM and our Business Partners can continue the drumbeat and build on this success in 2009. Good selling - Eric
