July 2009

A Note from Steve Early - Business Unit Executive, System z Software Channel Sales

As we conclude the first half of the year, it's clear the business community continues to see real value in the mainframe:

  • More than 150 ISV's ported solutions to the mainframe in 2008, raising the number of new applications by more than 1,000.
  • 600 universities worldwide now offer coursework on System z.
  • More than 50,000 students have taken mainframe classes since this activity began, and many have secured positions with major corporations around the world.
And we've seen growth in new accounts and an embrace of the specialty engine technology available for System z, particularly with respect to Linux.

As you develop your plans for the second half of the year, keep in mind some key points found in the latest customer survey data:

  • Sellers need to put renewed focus on the benefits new technology brings to the business
  • Budget will go to those projects which are most profitable to solve within the clients' organization
  • The single largest inhibitor to mainframe usage growth is third-party software costs, followed by mainframe complexity

Be sure to consider this data as you develop your sales and marketing plans.  If you haven't had an opportunity to view the new System z software spring launch page in PartnerWorld (see the article below), take the time to do so.

In addition, you may have had a chance to listen to the webcast on the new TCO tool developed by the Competitive Project Office.   This is a great tool to communicate the value of the mainframe to your clients - while addressing their cost and complexity issues.   A replay is being planned with more information to come on PartnerWorld (check out the next edition of zTIPS or speak with your System z Software channels rep for more details).

Thank you for your efforts during the first half of the year, and let's get off to a fast start to the second half of the year.

Steve

New z Services Opportunity in your z Customers with OMNIbus/TEC
The Tivoli Event Pump on z/OS 4.2 IF 1 now includes a new Data Source Customizer.   The Event Pump enables customers to move messages received in the syslog and convert  them into EIF and send them to OMNIbus/TEC.  This enables customers to have an end-to-end view of state and status of resources inclusive of the z/OS systems.  The Event Pump on z/OS, out of the box, forwards messages from CICS, IMS, DB2, OPS/MVS, etc; however, you will find new services opportunities in most customers because they will have unique z applications (built by themselves or 3rd parties) and can benefit by having those messages included as part of the centralization of state and status events.   The Data Source Customizer is a tool which you can be use to add those syslog messages to the Event Pump registration for forwarding to OMNIbus.

Target your OMNIbus/TEC or TBSMz 4.2 customers and help them build an end-to-end view of event management for business service management services.   To learn more about this opportunity and receive one-on-one education to get started, call or email Mike E Goodman.  (megoodma@us.ibm.com / 919-224-2531)

June Press Release - Wooing Mainframe nonbelievers
New software products address modern workloads
IBM is making clients around the globe "believers" in the flexibility of IBM System z for today's applications and workloads.

Mainframe clients don't always utilize the system to its fullest potential; it's often relegated to legacy applications in their minds as well as their data centers. To counteract this misperception, and to demonstrate the modern mainframe's flexibility and cost effectiveness, the IBM team is meeting with clients to talk about IT from a cost perspective, and highlighting how they can leverage System z as the most cost-effective platform to run their business.

The team explains to clients that there are four ways to quickly reduce costs and deliver a competitive edge: 1) consolidate applications and data, 2) optimize deployment of data, 3) reuse applications and data, and 4) properly account for costs.

IBM’s ongoing pursuit is to help customers simplify their environment and reduce costs by migrating scattered applications and data onto a lower cost, more scalable and manageable platform.

New IBM software (see sidebar) – spanning IBM's branded product lines for application architecture, development, and delivery; business intelligence and database management; transaction management and IT service management – will extend the advantages of using System z as a platform for developing, deploying and running today’s applications and business data.

Independent software vendors (ISVs) – including SAP, Chordiant, Temenos, i-flex, ACI and Norkom – are demonstrating interest in z, with more than 150 new ISVs in 2008, and more than 1,000 new vendor applications.

In addition to customer adoption of System z, 600 universities worldwide now offer coursework on System z. Since 2004, more than 50,000 students have taken mainframe classes and many have secured opportunities with leading banks, such as Citigroup, through an IBM program linking interested businesses with the students.

Misconceptions and Old Wives Tales on DB2 Database Maintenance and Recovery
  • Teleconference: July 7, 2009
  • Every DBA strives to maintain a healthy DB2 environment every day. However, there are numerous lingering misconceptions about database health to which many organizations fall prey. These misconceptions occur because Database Administrators believe in, or apply concepts that are, objectively false. Like old wives' tales, some misconceptions exist simply because they have been passed down from older generations. In terms of DB2, this means that even best practices true for older DB2 versions may no longer be best. This teleconference comprises a number of the most common ones about DB2 maintenance and recovery.
