A note from Steve Early, Business Unit Executive, System z software channel sales The summer,
which seemed like it just arrived, is soon to leave us. This brings up three thoughts:
- Memories of
summer vacation
- Our children facing school start-up
- The third quarter is rapidly coming to an end
As
mentioned last month, we had a good second quarter and are hopefully leveraging the momentum to do the same in the third
quarter. The economy is picking up in many parts of the world, and our customers are once again making purchase decisions.
Make sure you put a good business case together, deliver it to the decision maker(s) and ask for the order. With the
best product set and sales channel in the industry, we can't be beat when we execute properly.
Co-marketing funding
is available in each country around the world. With this funding, IBM and the Business Partner firm split the costs
associated with approved campaigns. It's a great way to identify new sales opportunities and generate incremental revenue.
See your IBM channels representative for further details.
Please be sure to review the article on the newly-announced
System z software widget for Business Partners. It's a great tool which should provide you with the information
needed to address customer issues and close business. Good luck and good selling the rest of the quarter.

Announcing NEW Virtual Learning Topics available using the System z Software Learning Roadmap
Our Global Business Partner Community demands responsive, point-of-need learning and the ability to rapidly access learning
activities to build knowledge and skill. Because of the expanding virtual learning environments available to our community
today, an interactive and easy-to-use System z roadmap was created. The modular framework focuses on the concepts
of network-centric learning that actively engages the learner and fosters an individualized learning pace. This roadmap
should be used as your guide for working towards a successful educational outcome in helping to sell and support System z
software.
NEW Topics now Covered in the System z Learning Roadmap
- Selling z/OS Qualities of Service
to your CxO course.
- Today’s CxOs are concerned about doing more with less, meeting business needs more
quickly, and complying with regulations. The mainframe is the best platform for running mission-critical workload because
it has evolved to run this work extremely efficiently and economically. This course will address the two key factors that
must be understood when choosing a platform for deploying new and modernized business workloads: Total Cost of Ownership
(TCO) and Qualities of Service (QoS), and will help you sell these to your CxO.
- Introduction to Contracts for
System z Software course.
- This course is designed to build foundational knowledge of System z software licensing
contracts, including related terminology, terms and conditions of basic IBM contracts, and the rules for using these basic
contracts. The following agreements are covered in detail in this course: the IBM Customer Agreement (ICA), the International
Program Licensing Agreement (IPLA), and the IBM Agreement for the Acquisition of Software Maintenance (IAASM).
- Selling
the Value of System z Software Currency course.
- The purpose of this course is to help you identify the benefits
of the software products for System z and how maintaining software currency is beneficial to customer operations. Upon completion
of this module, you should be able to recognize and address common objections to staying current on software, explain why
it is beneficial to customers to stay current with the latest release of software for System z, and identify the benefits
of software version currency for several software products for System z.
- Selling IT Service Management for System
z course.
- This course is designed to build foundational knowledge of Information Technology Service Management
(ITSM) on System z. During this course, you will learn why selling ITSM on System z is beneficial to you as an IBM seller
and the value that ITSM provides to customers. This course also explains how to include ITSM in your sales opportunities
and provides several job aids and help resources.
- Selling SOA Modernization on System z course.
- Many
IBM System z users are actively looking to derive greater returns from their mainframe investments through the use of SOA.
This course introduces participants to the Service Oriented Architecture for System z and the tools, such as IBM’s
Host Transformation Services (HATS) and Rational Developer for System z (RDz), to provide our customers with greater value
for their companies’ applications assets.
We hope that you find this 'Roadmap for
Learning' a valuable and a useful tool for System z education. You can be assured that as new material is made available
or new products are announced learning activities will be added or enhanced. Our challenge to you is to start using
this roadmap today and inform us of your learning experience, ROBERTJ@US.IBM.COM (Robert A Johnson/Raleigh).

Achieve Rapid ROI with New Workloads on Systems z
- Webcast: September 16
- Modernization is about making your business more responsive,
applications more flexible, reusable and easy to maintain. However, rewriting them can be expensive, time consuming and risky,
with no guarantee that they are any better. And replacing them with packaged solutions can also be problematic because you
risk losing the intellectual capital that’s buried deep in your systems. Repurposing or modernizing existing mainframe
applications is both a financially sound and a time-tested approach to modifying existing assets so they can be included
as part of a service oriented architecture (SOA). By modernizing your applications, you can make them more agile, flexible
and robust, increasing your organization’s responsiveness to marketplace dynamics and changing business needs.
