developerWorks Weekly Edition

5 November 2009   | Volume 10, Issue 42

Welcome, developers!

We've spent the last few weeks making a fuss over developerWorks' 10th birthday. (You have been paying attention, haven't you?) An impressive track record, sure, but it no doubt elicits yawns from the UNIX crowd -- that operating system turned 40 this year. Naturally, a stalwart technology like that deserves substantial coverage on our site, so our AIX and UNIX zone is packed with hundreds of resources. (AIX, IBM's UNIX implementation, is 23 -- nothing to sneeze at.) You can get your bearings with the New to AIX and UNIX page or our AIX and UNIX top 10 list. The zone's vast library includes Martin Streicher's new article, which shows you how Pipe Viewer gives you a peek into command-line plumbing.

And as always, there's plenty more in store on developerWorks. Take a look at this week's top features:

No, none of these technologies are anywhere near as old as UNIX, but I've learned not to judge anything based solely on its age. Trust me, 40 is looking pretty youthful from where I stand.

Until next week,
John Swanson and the developerWorks editorial team
